“What matters most is how well you walk through the fire” Charles Bukowski

This quote makes me think of all of life’s trials and tribulations it has tried to throw at me to see me break.

It is interesting to see how strong we truly are, after we have survived an internal or external war. Then I think of , “..the fire.”, what is Bukowski referring too? Is it the fire that burns from within? Is it he fire we see through rage? Is it the fire we experience through intense passion and pleasures? What exactly is, “the fire”? I guess it can be all the above, plus an infinite amount of other options. The point is simply to, be strong and deliberate in your choices. (I’m speaking to myself especially) No matter what life throws at us, God will never gives us more than we can bear. Getting through and putting out our daily fires is what gives us strength to fight another day. Like the saying goes, “Only The strong Survive”, that doesn’t always mean physical strength. You need the mental strength in order for the physical strength to be an asset and not a liability.

So we just need to buckle our life seat belts and enjoy the ride.

Here is the poem that the quote came from:

By  Charles Bukowski

during my worst times
on the park benches
in the jails
or living with
whores
I always had this certain
contentment-
I wouldn’t call it
happiness-
it was more of an inner
balance
that settled for
whatever was occuring
and it helped in the
factories
and when relationships
went wrong
with the
girls.
it helped
through the
wars and the
hangovers
the backalley fights
the
hospitals.
to awaken in a cheap room
in a strange city and
pull up the shade-
this was the craziest kind of
contentment

and to walk across the floor
to an old dresser with a
cracked mirror-
see myself, ugly,
grinning at it all.
what matters most is
how well you
walk through the
fire.
